Panaji: A 23-year-old Kerala-native, Gawri Narayan, who was a medical intern in the orthopaedics department at Goa Medical College (GMC), allegedly died by suicide after overdosing on a powerful sedative. Panaji police recovered a vial and tablets from Hawaii beach at Dona Paula, where her body was found.PI Vijaykumar Chodankar said a postmortem examination was conducted, and the body was handed over to the family for the last rites.“We have registered a case of unnatural death. During the investigation, it emerged that she had attempted suicide around three months ago and was undergoing treatment for depression,” Chodankar said.He said doctors have reserved the cause of death pending viscera and chemical analysis reports. “The postmortem report noted a needle-prick mark,” Chodankar said.Police said the intern had been staying at the GMC hostel since joining the MBBS course. Police said she spoke to her mother at 4pm on Wednesday, which was the last call on her phone.Police received information about the incident at 6pm. A team from Panaji police station rushed to the spot, conducted a panchanama and shifted the body to GMC.Investigators said there were no signs of physical assault, and her clothes were found intact.GMC constituted a panel of doctors to conduct the autopsy, which was carried out on Thursday evening in the presence of family members.
