Noida: The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS), Greater Noida, has launched a dedicated clinic to provide specialised treatment for children born with clubfoot, a common congenital deformity that can lead to lifelong disability if left untreated.The clinic was inaugurated this week to mark World Clubfoot Day.Medically known as congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), clubfoot affects about one in every 1,000 live births and is more common in boys. Experts estimate that nearly 30,000 children are born with the condition in India each year. The deformity causes one or both feet to turn inward and downward at birth, often making walking and other daily activities difficult if not corrected early.According to GIMS officials, the clinic will operate every Friday from 11 am to 2 pm and provide comprehensive treatment under one roof.“Children will receive evaluation, serial casting, bracing and follow-up care based on globally accepted treatment protocols. Braces will also be provided free of cost with support from Cure International,” said GIMS director Dr (Brig.) Rakesh Gupta.Doctors said early intervention is critical, but many children from smaller towns and rural areas either reach hospitals late or discontinue treatment midway, increasing the risk of recurrence.Orthopaedic specialists said the new facility aims not only to provide treatment but also to raise awareness among parents, paediatricians and frontline health workers that clubfoot is a correctable condition.Officials said the weekly clinic and free bracing support are expected to improve treatment compliance and help more children access timely care, preventing long-term disability.
