Pune: Homes are being decked up to celebrate Janmashtami in the night intervening Friday and Saturday, while the city gears up for colourful and enthusiastic Dahi Handi celebrations as Govinda teams will form towering human pyramids and break decorated earthen pots filled with curd.The festivities are expected to be marked by energetic dhol-tasha performances, processions and cheering crowds. Thousands of devotees and spectators will gather to witness the daring feats. “The prize money is Rs1.11 lakh this year. Celebrations will start from midnight. We are expecting good response from Govinda teams from Mumbai, Pune and Nashik,” said Balasaheb Marne, president, Hutatma Babu Genu Mandal, one of the oldest mandals in the city.Ronak Taware, trustee, Akhil Budhwar Peth Dahi Handi Utsav Trust, said, “Preparations are on in full swing for Dahi Handi. We have the biggest light setup this year. The main event will take place at 9.30pm on Saturday.“Yogesh Pawar, who participates every year in Dahi Handi, said, “A core team practises and there are others who just join in later. It requires good coordination and practice. It’s more of a fun exercise than anything religious.”For Janmashtami celebrations. Iskcon Pune has a 24-hour Kirtan planned, along with a cultural programme and a Maha Aarti across its three key temples on Friday. Janardan Chitode, spokesperson, Iskcon Pune (Katraj Kondhwa Road), said, “Artists from 75 musical groups have been performing at the temples since Sept 1. A total of 700 artists will perform over five days. Around 500-700 kg of flowers are being used for decoration purposes and we are expecting 5-6 lakh devotees to be part of the celebrations.” Volunteers will be preparing and offering halwa to all the devotees.Many residents will celebrate Janmashtami at home. “We will decorate Krishna shrine with flowers, peacock feathers and diyas. We offer makhan and sweets to Lord Krishna and have a small jhula decorated with fresh flowers,” said Vandana Solanki, a resident of Baner.
