SRINAGAR: Hours before CJP’s protest in Delhi on Saturday, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk said he would not join the demonstration, turning to Urdu poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz to explain why Ladakh currently needs him more than Delhi.“Mujh se pehli si mohabbat mere mehboob na maang,” (Do not ask from me, my beloved, the love I gave you earlier), he said, quoting the Pakistani poet, in a video posted on X Friday evening.Wangchuk said he and his team were preparing for winter by conducting scientific experiments to create artificial glaciers to secure water supplies and developing measures to protect communities in Ladakh from glacial lake outburst floods.

While commending those “who are working to avert the political dangers looming over the country”, he said “not all threats are political; some are from nature too”.Invoking Faiz again, Wangchuk adapted a line from his famous couplet, “Aur bhi gham hain zamane mein siyasat ke siva” (There are other sorrows in the world beyond politics).” The activist urged the protest organisers and participants to remain united and peaceful.During CJP’s protest against NEET paper leak at Jantar Mantar in July, Wangchuk’s prolonged fast had mobilised a large number of people to join the stir.
