Former TMC MLA Asit Mazumdar arrested in 2014 case, court grants bail

Chinsurah: Former Trinamool MLA and district neta Asit Mazumdar was arrested on Tuesday morning and later released on bail by a Chinsurah court in the evening.Mazumdar was preparing to lead supporters to Kolkata for Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee’s July 21 rally when a police team from the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate searched his residence near Khadina More and took him into custody. The arrest stems from a complaint filed by a local resident, Jyothsna Hazra, who alleged that Mazumdar and a former civic chairperson threatened her and forcibly seized her garage in 2014. Based on her complaint, police booked him under Sections 308(5), 316(2), 318(4), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).However, upon being produced before the Chinsurah court later in the day, he was granted bail.Reacting to the development, local BJP MLA Subir Nag said, “The police acted promptly. Most councillors in the Chinsurah municipality had already resigned earlier over widespread corruption allegations.”Denying the allegations, Mazumdar claimed the arrest was politically motivated. “I was getting ready to attend Didi’s program in Kolkata with my supporters. The police arrested me on instructions from the BJP leadership,” he said.Despite being denied a ticket in the recent assembly elections, Mazumdar has remained a staunch Mamata loyalist. When several netas quit TMC, he stayed back and worked closely with MP Kalyan Banerjee. He was previously arrested while participating in a demonstration protesting an attack on Abhishek Banerjee shortly after the incident.
