NEW DELHI: Former Delhi chief secretary Rakesh Mehta, who served during chief minister Sheila Dikshit’s tenure, allegedly died by suicide at his residence in Noida, officials said on Tuesday.Mehta, 74, a 1975-batch IAS officer, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his Sector 82 residence on September 6, officials told news agency PTI.Noida Police recovered a purported suicide note in which he cited his “mental and health issues” as the reasons behind the extreme step.Mehta’s body was cremated at the Lodhi Road crematorium on Monday.Mehta served as Delhi’s chief secretary for more than three years, taking charge in 2007 and retiring in November 2010. The 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi were organised during his tenure.He was credited with overseeing the execution of several key transport, power and civic infrastructure projects in the national capital.Mehta held several positions in the Delhi government during his career and also served as commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, according to his former colleagues.(with inputs from PTI)
