Pune: A five-year-old girl was injured in Pimpri on Sunday afternoon after residents said she was attacked by five to six stray dogs. The child was rushed to a hospital, where her condition was reported to be stable.The incident took place around 2pm. The girl, Anshika Mishra had stepped out of her house to play when some nearby residents heard her cry out. They rushed to the spot and shooed the dogs around her away.Her father Giridhar Mishra said he was at work at the time. “I have two daughters. My elder daughter, Anshika, had stepped out of the house when one dog charged at her and the others joined in. She was injured on her head, hands and leg.”Local activist Sharad Tamhane said, “The girl fainted following the incident. She was injured, but is stable now. We have raised complaints about the stray dogs before, but no action was taken. The civic administration is failing to carry out sterilisations so the population of stray dogs is increasing.”PCMC deputy municipal commissioner Sandip Khot told TOI, “Veterinary department teams were sent to the spot after receiving the complaint on Sunday. The team remains deployed there on Monday as well.”A senior civic official said the dogs were not found at the location. “We have already intensified efforts for sterilisation and vaccination across the city,” he said.As per PCMC data, the civic body has sterilised 1,137 stray animals in 2026-27 till July, and has administered the anti-rabies vaccines to 10,398 animals. In 2025-26, the civic body sterilised 2,928 stray dogs and vaccinated 16,179 against rabies.
