Five mobile phones, two power banks, and charging cables were found on the premises of Yerawada Open Prison during a surprise check on Sunday.A prison officer, Sunil Gaikwad, lodged a complaint with the Yerawada Police Station on Tuesday evening.Senior Inspector Anjum Bagwan of Yerawada police told TOI, “The prison authorities received a tip-off and conducted a search of different barracks on Sunday evening, during which the mobile phones were found.”“On Saturday evening, prison officials were conducting a round of the premises after receiving a tip-off when they noticed an inmate moving suspiciously near the washroom area,” Bagwan said.“The officials decided to check the area and question the inmate. During the search, the inmate told them that he had found a mobile phone on the premises and then left the spot,” he said.“The phone was seized, and on Sunday, the authorities scanned the entire premises,” he added. “More mobile phones were subsequently found. We are investigating how these mobile phones were brought into the prison and who owns the SIM cards.”
