Gurgaon: An FIR has been registered against comedian Pranit More and audience member Himanshu Jangra after a clip from a performance was widely circulated on social media, triggering criticism and prompting intervention by National Commission for Women (NCW).The controversy erupted from an interaction during a show in the city in which Jangra narrated an experience about a date. According to the clip, he spoke about spending Rs 370 on a plate of chicken biryani and suggested that, because he had paid for the outing, he expected something in return when the woman later asked him to drop her home.The clip rapidly spread online, drawing sharp criticism from social media users and women’s rights advocates, many of whom called for legal action. Critics alleged that the remarks trivialised issues of consent and promoted attitudes that undermine women’s dignity.Following a complaint from NCW, an FIR was registered at DLF Phase 2 police station under Section 67 of the IT Act and sections 294, 353(3), 75(2) and 75(3) of BNS. The charges relate to dissemination of obscene content, circulation of objectionable material, spreading information considered harmful, sexual harassment and sexually coloured remarks.In its complaint, NCW expressed serious concern over the content of the video and the manner in which the alleged conduct was presented before a public audience. The commission observed that normalising or glorifying behaviour that undermines a woman’s consent, dignity and bodily autonomy could have wider social consequences and influence attitudes towards gender-based violence.Taking note of the matter, NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Haryana DGP, seeking immediate and time-bound action.Police said they also took suo motu cognisance of the content and began examining the circumstances surrounding the show and its circulation online.“Legal notices have been issued to both, asking them to join the investigation. Further action will be taken on the basis of the findings,” police spokesperson Sandeep Turan said.Officials said notices have also been sent to the social media platforms concerned, seeking removal of the video to prevent its further circulation.“Any activity that violates the dignity and honour of women will not be tolerated. Strict legal action will be taken against those found guilty,” Turan said.Police also urged social media users to exercise caution while creating, sharing or forwarding online content, warning that violations of the law could invite legal action.
