FDA commissioner Tukaram Mundhe directs event organisers to inform FDA before holding large catered gatherings

Mumbai: FDA commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has said those arranging large events expecting heavy footfalls where food is served through a caterer should inform FDA about it as a measure of precaution. His statement comes days after 70 guests at a wedding in Bhandup fell ill and at least 34, including the newlywed couple and four children, were hospitalised due to food poisoning. He said food samples in that event are being analysed and the food licence of the caterer has been suspended. “Any such events or get-together where a vendor or a caterer is arranged need to be told to FDA by both the arranger and the food business,” Mundhe said. The owner of Kalash Caterers in the Bhandup case is also facing police action. Mundhe said, “The initial order in that case was 400 plates. But then there were excess people who had arrived. There was a quarrel between the organisers and the caterer. For this excess demand, sweet items were supplied from another caterer.” He added that the second caterer is also under investigation with samples under analysis.
