Faulty infra, poor AC upkeep behind fires

Lucknow: Short circuits in air-conditioning (AC) units have emerged as the primary cause behind recent fire incidents across the city. Electrical experts say the problem stems from poor maintenance and faulty electrical infrastructure rather than the AC itself.According to experts, common reasons for AC-related fires include damaged wiring, loose electrical connections, ageing cables, improper wiring and overheating miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) and connectors. Older homes with outdated electrical systems are particularly vulnerable, as they often cannot handle the increased power load during peak summer.“People assume an AC can run continuously for 12-16 hours without any problems. In reality, prolonged operation during extreme heat stresses the compressor and other electrical components. If regular servicing has been neglected, the chances of overheating and fire increase,” said Arham Khan, an electrical engineer.“Most AC fires do not occur without warning. Repeated tripping of the circuit breaker, a burning smell, unusual humming noises and reduced cooling are all signs of an underlying electrical fault. Unfortunately, many homeowners ignore these warnings and continue using the AC until a major failure occurs or a fire occurs,” he added.Voltage fluctuations during peak summer can also damage compressors, capacitors and circuit boards, increasing the likelihood of short circuits. Poor maintenance, including dust-clogged condenser coils, blocked outdoor units and dirty filters, further strains the compressor, causing it to operate at higher temperatures. An AC service engineer with a refrigeration company, Mohammad Sharar Khan highlighted, “Continuous working of AC can overheat the units, one should give some cooling time for the machine. Components like connectors where the supply wire is connected should be checked regularly, while air filters and cooling coils should be cleaned regularly, and a proper stabiliser unit should also be connected.”Experts recommend servicing air conditioners every three to four months, as ACs are being used for longer periods nowadays. They also advise using a dedicated electrical circuit with the proper circuit breaker, avoiding overloaded sockets and replacing damaged wiring immediately. Repeatedly resetting a tripped breaker should be avoided, as recurring trips usually indicate an electrical fault that requires professional inspection
