Fake currency accused tries to flee, injured in cop firing

Guwahati: Dispur police shot an accused for his alleged participation in circulation of Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) early Saturday. The incident took place in Kangkan Nagar of the city, police said.The accused, Ajay Biswakarma of Dhemaji district, was arrested on Thursday after a counterfeit currency racket was busted in city’s Sixmile area, where fake notes worth over Rs 2 lakh were seized.“During interrogation on Friday night, Ajay revealed that a FICN printing machine was concealed at a particular location and offered to lead the police. Accordingly, the investigating team took him to the location. Upon reaching the spot, Ajay allegedly attacked a police constable and attempted to flee… To prevent his escape… the police fired two rounds aiming at his leg. While one bullet missed, the second struck him in the leg,” deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (East) Tabu Ram Pegu said.Pegu said following the incident Biswakarma was taken to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital and is stable and out of danger.Ajay also allegedly claimed to the media that counterfeit currency worth nearly Rs 100 crore was being circulated through an organised racket. Responding to this, the DCP said, “So far, we have found no evidence during the investigation to support the claim.”The DCP said between June 30 and July 1, Dispur PS recovered counterfeit currency with a face value of Rs. 13.46 lakh and arrested five people.
