Ferozepur: Two men on a motorcycle opened fire at a shop in Ferozepur’s Zira town on Thursday afternoon in an alleged bid to extort money from its owner. The shopowner, Suresh Kumar, said this was the second such attack on a property owned by him in the past 20 days, and that he and his son had been recieving extortion threats too. Zira deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Jaspal Singh Dhillon said the men fled after the attack on the shop at 12.30pm. “We are examining the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area, and have formed teams to identify the attackers,” he said.A large number of people gathered at the crime scene. Kumar said the youths had covered their faces and fired at his shop’s window from outside. He said a bullet broke the window, and its fragments fell inside the shop. Suresh said several customers were inside and could have been hurt due to the firing, but no one was injured.Suresh said it was not the first such incident. He said around 9.30pm on June 26, two motorcycle riders also fired shots outside his house. “No one was present at the house at that time, due to which no damage was caused. I had informed the police about that incident,” he said.He said his son Tarun Garg had been receiving threatening WhatsApp calls from unknown numbers for some time, due to which the family was worried. DSP Dhillon said the police were investigating the incident from all possible angles. He assured the accused who carried out the incident would be arrested soon. Traders and city residents have demanded the immediate arrest of the accused and more security in the market.
