Experts bat for preventive haemophilia treatment

Lucknow: UP may soon shift from treating haemophilia only during bleeding episodes to giving patients regular preventive treatment, experts said at the UP Hemophilia Conclave 2026.Dr S P Verma, head of clinical haematology at KGMU, said preventive therapy, known as prophylaxis, can help prevent permanent damage to joints and muscles caused by repeated bleeding. He said prophylaxis is the standard treatment followed globally and should be implemented more widely in the state.Dr A K Tripathi, former head of the haematology department at KGMU, said around 7,700 haemophilia patients are registered in UP, including nearly 5,500 patients with Haemophilia A. He said haemophilia should be managed as a long-term disease through regular treatment instead of treating patients only when bleeding occurs.Patients and their families also raised concerns about the high cost of treatment and the irregular supply of Factor VIII, an essential medicine for Haemophilia A, at govt hospitals. They urged authorities to ensure its regular availability.
