Guwahati: Assam govt’s decision to reintroduce entry fees at GMDA-managed parks, which were earlier made free, has drawn criticism from visitors.The parks attract people of all age groups, especially youngsters and senior citizens, for morning walks, workouts and relaxation in scenic surroundings.“During evening hours, one feels great to sit by the riverside. It is very relaxing, and people used to come from different corners of the city to the park. The govt had announced before the elections that it would be free, but why is the entrance fee system being reinstated after the polls? This will discourage the people from visiting the parks,” said Monuj Paul, a daily visitor to the riverfront park in Uzanbazar.The move reverses a Nov decision by then urban affairs minister Jayanta Mallabaruah that allowed free public access.College students said the decision undermines the purpose of public parks. “After classes, we knew that we could relax in the parks. People already pay taxes, and the govt must use those funds to maintain them. Charging us additionally for accessing open spaces would be slightly expensive,” said Ishan Chakavarty, a student.Others questioned the timing, alleging the decision was taken without public consultation. Some also flagged fee hikes in other GMDA-run facilities.The Guwahati ropeway, inaugurated in 2020, runs from Panbazar in front of Nehru Park on the south bank to Rajadwar village behind Dolgovinda Temple on the north bank. The one-way fare was Rs 60 at launch, rose to Rs 100 in 2021, and now stands at Rs 250. GMDA officials said maintenance costs are high and financial constraints have made operations difficult.
