Ludhiana: A punishing heatwave pushed temperatures past 42 degrees Celsius in Ludhiana on Tuesday, clearing major thoroughfares and prompting authorities to issue severe weather warnings before a projected weekend relief. The maximum daytime temperature touched 42.5°C, recording 3.2 degrees above the seasonal average. In response to the intensifying conditions, the India Meteorological Department issued an “orange alert” for Wednesday, warning residents to brace for a severe heatwave and potential health complications. The weather bureau also extended the orange alert into Thursday and Friday, predicting volatile atmospheric shifts including isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and strong wind gusts. Despite the incoming storm risks, meteorologists noted a silver lining: a high probability of steady rainfall starting Thursday, which is expected to break the protracted heat spell.Local families described increasingly restrictive daily routines as they attempted to manage the weather.“It has been a relentless stretch of heat,” said resident Naresh Kumar. “We are desperately waiting for the rain. If the temperatures don’t drop in the next few days, we’ll have to escape to the hill stations.”Homemaker Jasmeet Kaur said keeping children safe has become a daily struggle. “My kids are constantly frustrating me to let them play outside during the day. I have to keep them locked indoors and constantly push fluids to ensure they stay hydrated.”The intense midday heat effectively emptied Ludhiana’s usually congested business districts on Tuesday. Local commuters noted that the city’s population has collectively shifted its habits, completely avoiding outdoor commercial activity during the afternoon sun. Most residents now delay essential errands and socializing until well into the evening hours when radiation levels taper off.
