Emergency clean-up drive in Mapusa after severe waterlogging

Mapusa: The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) and the water resources department (WRD) launched an emergency cleanliness drive across the town after severe waterlogging inundated low-lying areas, major junctions and the Mapusa market. The flooding disrupted business activity and caused hardship to traders, vendors and consumers, while also exposing shortcomings in the town’s monsoon preparedness.Municipal engineers, along with former councillor Shubhangi Vaiangankar, conducted a joint inspection of the main drainage line at the Khorlim-Usapkar junction on Tuesday and Wednesday to identify the cause of the flooding. The inspection revealed that despite recent desilting, the drainage network remained heavily clogged with plastic bottles, clothing, and large deposits of tar. Officials said tar from recent hot-mix road carpeting works likely washed into the drains during the heavy rain, aggravating the blockage.Clearance operations continued on Wednesday, with workers facing difficulties in removing debris entangled around live electrical wires inside the market’s internal drainage channels.Using heavy machinery, including an earth mover, teams removed large quantities of sludge and domestic waste that had accumulated against iron filter nets (preal gates) installed along the drainage system.
