Bhayander: The education department has issued a show-cause notice to Seven Square School in Mira Road, owned by BJP MLA Narendra Mehta, over a controversial advisory asking students not to bring onion, garlic, potatoes, beetroot and other root vegetables in their lunch boxes during the Paryushan period.The advisory, issued after Paryushan began on Sept 8, was opposed by various political parties and organisations. Following the criticism, the school withdrew the advisory on Thursday evening.The notice was issued by Thane Zilla Parishad education officer (secondary) Devidas Mahajan following a complaint by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). The education department said the school has students from different castes and religions and that such an advisory could amount to putting mental pressure on students and violate provisions of the Right to Education Act, 2009. It said imposing restrictions on food choices on religious grounds could also violate constitutional values and the principle of equal treatment of students.The school has been directed to submit a written explanation within two days. Failure to submit a reply, or an unsatisfactory explanation, could invite administrative action under the Right to Education Act and the Maharashtra Self-financed Schools Act, 2013.Meanwhile, the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation has separately complained to the deputy education director, seeking an inquiry and appropriate action. Civic education officer Sulabha Vatare has made the request in a letter.
