Colva: Deposits of tar balls have begun appearing along the Salcete coastline well ahead of the monsoon season, raising fresh concerns about marine pollution and coastal health.While such occurrences are typically reported in late May or June, this year the phenomenon has surfaced earlier than expected. The highest concentration of the oily residues has been observed along the Cavelossim–Varca stretch, while the Benaulim–Colva coastline has largely remained unaffected so far.On Tuesday morning, large sections of the Cavelossim–Varca beach bore visible black streaks—oily deposits left behind by the receding high tide—alarming locals and visitors alike.Fishermen attribute the phenomenon to seasonal oceanic activity. According to them, shifting currents during this period churn the sea, bringing up remnants of oil discharged by passing vessels. These residues gradually coagulate into tar balls and are eventually pushed ashore by tidal movements.Cavelossim sarpanch Dixon Vaz warned that tar balls—solidified fragments of crude oil—pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems. Species such as crabs and shrimps, which are crucial to both local biodiversity and the livelihoods of fishing communities, are particularly vulnerable to prolonged exposure.Meanwhile, personnel from Ecostan Infra Private Ltd, the agency responsible for beach cleaning, stated that the tar deposits were promptly removed through manual efforts.However, they cautioned that more tar balls are likely to wash ashore with upcoming high tides, indicating that the issue may persist in the coming days.
