Ludhiana: A local court has sentenced four drug traffickers, including a couple, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for keeping 98-kg poppy husk.Special court judge Gurpreet Kaur also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on each convict. In Sept 2015, police had intercepted Shinderpal, his wife Sandeep, Charanjit, and Jagtar Chand near Gauspur Chowk following a high-speed chase. While the defence argued for acquittal due to a lack of independent witnesses, the court cited a Supreme Court ruling that police testimony remains credible despite the absence of civilian observers. The convicts, all from Talwandi Kalan, were found with the illicit haul hidden in a car. Each faces another year in jail should they fail to pay the mandated fines.
