Chennai: Domestic tractor sales grew 20.5% year-on-year in July but declined sharply by 38.5% sequentially from June volumes. The month-on-month decline is considered a seasonal trend, with tractor sales typically moderating in July after peaking in June.Industry representatives and analysts, however, believe the underlying demand environment remains intact, with rural demand holding up despite concerns over El Niño-related weather disruptions.Discussing overall rural demand, Tanvee Gupta Jain, chief India economist at UBS, said improved rainfall had supported a recovery in summer crop (kharif) sowing, with the decline in total acreage narrowing from around 21% year-on-year in early July to less than 2% by the first week of August. Water reservoir levels also remain close to normal, she said.Companies are also witnessing increasing mechanisation in rural India, both through higher tractor penetration and greater adoption of farm machinery.According to data from the Tractor & Mechanisation Association (TMA), domestic tractor sales stood at 77,482 units in July 2026, compared with 64,320 units in July 2025 and 126,041 units in June 2026.Top tractor maker Mahindra & Mahindra reported a 21% increase in July domestic tractor sales to 32,643 units. The company attributed the growth to a significant recovery in rainfall, improved reservoir levels, accelerated kharif sowing aided by government support and healthy farm cash flows, which boosted farmer sentiments.Escorts reported a 24% rise in July domestic tractor sales to 8,194 units. The company said improved rainfall in July had reduced the cumulative rainfall deficit to 14%-15%, while kharif sowing activity picked up pace, supporting rural demand and sentiments. Overall rural fundamentals remain resilient, it said.Tractor production, meanwhile, remained broadly stable sequentially at 1.1 lakh units and rose 6.7% year-on-year in July. Exports were higher at 8780 units as against 8477 units in July 2025.
