Kalyan: A court on Tuesday granted bail to Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting doctors and nurses of a civic-run hospital in Dombivli last week.Mhatre was remanded in judicial custody on Monday after his police custody ended. His counsel then moved a bail application before the court.Urging the court not to grant any relief, police said several criminal cases had been filed against Mhatre in the past. Defence lawyer A Y Patki said in almost all the cases cited by police, he was either acquitted or the proceedings quashed, and that only one criminal case was pending against him.Sources said while in judicial custody, the 72-year-old corporator was admitted to Thane Civil Hospital owing to health issues. Mhatre is said to be suffering from kidney and prostate ailments and was kept under medical supervision instead of being lodged in jail.Meanwhile, Sena’s Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde said the party had already issued a show-cause notice to Mhatre. “Action has been taken against those responsible. No attempt has been made to shield anyone. Police have acted in accordance with the law.”On July 6, Mhatre and his supporters allegedly assaulted doctors and other staffers of Shastri Nagar Hospital over a purported delay in treating a pregnant patient. The attack triggered a two-day suspension of routine outpatient services at all civic-run hospitals across Kalyan-Dombivli.
