Surat: A city urologist who operated a multispecialty hospital from rented premises in Vesu has been arrested after police registered a case alleging unpaid rent of around Rs 2 crore and illegal occupation of the property, under provisions of the Gujarat Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act.Vesu police booked Dr Subodh Kamble and his company, Aapricorp Health Private Limited, based on a complaint by Sanjay Shah, a Mumbai-based businessman.According to the FIR, Shah owns six shops on the first floor and four shops on the third floor of the White House commercial complex in Vesu. The premises were leased to Kamble’s company in Dec 2022 for a monthly rent of Rs 3.58 lakh. Kamble was operating a multispecialty hospital from the property.The rent agreement provided for a 5% annual increase in rent and allowed termination in the event of a breach of conditions. It also permitted cancellation if rent remained unpaid for two consecutive months.Police said Kamble paid rent until Sep 2023. Shah issued a legal notice after the alleged default. The complaint states that when Shah approached Kamble for payment of dues or vacating of the premises, Kamble allegedly threatened to file an Atrocities Act case against him.Shah later approached the Surat collector under the Gujarat Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Act. The land-grabbing committee ruled in Shah’s favour and directed the Surat police commissioner to register a criminal case against Kamble.Vesu police inspector J A Rathwa said, “We arrested the accused doctor on Monday after the FIR was filed. The accused ran a multispecialty hospital in Vesu and was not vacating it. After he was produced in court, he was sent to judicial custody.”
