Varanasi: To ensure proper monitoring and survival of saplings planted during the current plantation season, district magistrate Satyendra Kumar has directed officials to begin geo-tagging every sapling planted this year. He also instructed departments to complete the process of notifying three wetlands in the district.The directions were issued during a joint meeting of the district plantation committee, district Ganga committee, district wetland committee and district environment committee convened by the DM on Tuesday evening. The meeting reviewed the progress of works related to environmental protection, conservation of the Ganga and its tributaries, promotion of wetlands, the annual plantation campaign and other environmental issues. Officers of all concerned departments attended the meeting.Reviewing preparations for the large-scale plantation campaign for 2026-27, the DM directed that geo-tagging of all planted saplings be made mandatory to facilitate proper monitoring and follow-up.Under the district Ganga committee, officials reviewed compliance with the directions of the National Green Tribunal, New Delhi, regarding the restoration and rejuvenation of the Ganga and its tributary rivers. During the District Wetland Committee meeting, proposals related to notifying three wetlands in the district were also discussed.The district environment committee reviewed the management of solid waste, plastic waste, construction and demolition waste, biomedical waste and e-waste. The DM also issued directions to improve air quality, ensure segregation of waste at source, regularly update information on the UPECP portal and strengthen compliance with environmental regulations.He directed all departments to ensure strict adherence to government orders and achieve the prescribed targets within the stipulated time.
