Discom launches AI-driven ‘HYPER’ plan

Hyderabad: To tackle monsoon-related power disruptions and ensure speedy restoration during heavy rains and gale winds, the Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGNPDCL) has launched a specialised, tech-driven action plan titled ‘HYPER’. The initiative leverages real-time weather updates, AI, and drone monitoring to minimise downtime and restore electricity on a war-footing basis.TGNPDCL chairman and managing director Karnati Varun Reddy said the discom adopted the HYPER framework to serve consumers swiftly. “Prompt resumption of power supply within the stipulated turnaround time will be ensured,” he explained. As part of the plan, GPRS-enabled emergency restore teams will be stationed in all 18 circles of the northern discom. Fully equipped vehicles stocked with repair inventory have been deployed to minimize response time during breakdowns caused by uprooted trees or snapped lines. The GPRS integration allows the control room to track team locations in real time, ensuring the nearest unit can reach the breakdown spot instantly. “This will drastically cut response time and improve restoration efficiency,” Varun Reddy said. The CMD revealed that TGNPDCL has successfully integrated AI with existing SCADA, GIS, and outage management system platforms to create an early warning system. This predictive model can identify potential feeder faults seven to 21 days in advance, enabling preventive maintenance before disruptions occur.Drone technology is also being deployed for aerial inspection of power lines and rapid damage assessment in inaccessible terrains. This will allow faster identification of faults and quicker mobilisation of repair teams.
