Dhami accuses govt of misusing police, seeks action against guilty cops
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami with Mohanjit Singh

Amritsar: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami has accused the Aam Aadmi Party govt of “misusing” the police. When people ask questions of govt, it misuses the police, Dhami said after meeting Mohanjit Singh, who was allegedly subjected to torture by the police. The SGPC chief, who met Mohanjit to inquire about his health, assured him of all possible assistance.Dhami said when the young Gursikh questioned chief minister Bhagwant Singh Mann about drugs during a public meeting in a village, the police not only tortured him but also committed a serious offence by desecrating his kesh (unshorn hair) and kakars, the five articles of Sikh faith.“The Sikh community will never tolerate the desecration of the articles of faith of a young Gursikh, who raised his voice against drug abuse,” said Dhami. He added that whenever a Sikh is subjected to oppression, the SGPC, as the apex Sikh body, considers it its duty to stand by the victim. He said the kakars are an integral part of Sikh life and no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands and desecrate Sikh religious symbols.Talking about substance abuse, he said the growing menace of drugs in Punjab is a major question facing the govt. While young people are losing their lives to drug addiction, the govt is ignoring the issue and instead attempting to portray those raising questions and protesting as the guilty parties, he said.Dhami demanded strict and exemplary punishment for those found guilty of deliberately desecrating the articles of faith. The SGPC is committed to providing every possible help to Mohanjit Singh. If he wishes, arrangements can also be made for his treatment at Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College, he added.
