CHENNAI: Police should register a case against Tasmac employees at retail vending outlets if they are found overcharging the consumers, ruled Madras high court, ordering the state govt to deploy police personnel to regulate buyers at crowded liquor shops.Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan issued the directions on Friday, when the state govt submitted the compliance report of the court’s earlier direction to provide bills for each purchase at liquor outlets across the state. The state govt submitted that a circular in this regard had been issued to all district managers and cited heavy crowds during peak hours as reason for not providing bills.The petitioner, G Devarajan, who appeared as party-in-person, however, submitted that bill was not provided at a liquor shop even on Thursday after Tasmac issued a circular in this regard.The judge noted that it is incomprehensible as to why providing a bill is an unachievable feat for an organisation like Tasmac that generates huge revenue to the state exchequer and questioned the possibility of deploying police personnel to regulate crowd at liquor shops.The judge censured liquor buyers for the current state of affairs as paying more than MRP at liquor shops encourages salesmen to demand money beyond MRP.He said liquor buyers can lodge a complaint at the police station concerned if liquor shops continue to overcharge in violation of the Tasmac’s latest circular and directed police to take action on such complaints.The judge directed DVAC to formally probe into the allegation of overcharging by the petitioner in about 30 shops and submit a report.
