tnnCalangute: Calangute Congress block committee has called on the govt to reconsider the tourism department’s ongoing demolition drive at Calangute, stating that it will affect the traditional fishing community. The tourism deparment had demolished 21 structures on the beach in Khobravaddo, stating that they had encroached on govt-owned land earlier this week. Last month, structures had been similarly demolished in Sauntawaddo. The drive will continue to clear all such illegal structures.Calangute Congress block committee president Lourenco Silveira said most of the demolished structures were small huts where the fishing community stored their boats and fishing equipment. “The fishing community has been there on the beach long before there was tourism in Goa. Govt should consider their interests as their livelihoods are at stake How can they take their boats to houses after fishing?,” asked Silviera.
