New Delhi: Central govt will supply 1,000 metric tonnes of onions to Delhi, which will be sold to consumers at Rs 35 per kg through fair price shops and mobile vans, chief minister Rekha Gupta said Tuesday. The move is aimed at ensuring adequate availability of onions and preventing a shortage amid concerns over rising prices and supply in the capital. The onions will be sold through fair price shops across Delhi. In addition, the govt will deploy one mobile van in each of the city’s 13 districts to take the subsidised onions to different localities.“The govt would not allow an onion shortage to develop in Delhi and would continue to monitor the situation to protect consumers from a sharp rise in prices,” Gupta said. The mobile vans are intended to improve access to the subsidised onions in areas where consumers may have limited access to fair price shops. The initiative comes amid the govt’s broader efforts to ensure the availability of essential food items at affordable rates. Officials said the distribution arrangements would be worked out to ensure the onions reach consumers across all 13 districts.
