Delhi Police personnel stage protest at PHQ over transfer of ACP, SHO
In view of the growing tension, security arrangements around the headquarters were subsequently strengthened

NEW DELHI: Several Delhi Police personnel staged a protest at the Delhi Police Headquarters (PHQ) against the transfer of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) and the Station House Officer (SHO) of Shahdara district. The transfers followed protests by lawyers, who accused the two officers of misbehaviour and alleged that the ACP had brandished his pistol during an altercation. In a striking turn of events, the ACP whose transfer had sparked the demonstration was himself leading the protest, adding an unusual dimension to the incident. The demonstration unfolded in two phases, with the first gathering taking place outside the Delhi Police Headquarters, followed by a second protest within the premises.Several police personnel assembled to express their opposition to the transfer orders, signalling their dissatisfaction with the departmental action taken against the two officers following the allegations levelled by lawyers.During the demonstration, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) approached the protesting personnel and attempted to pacify them. He urged them not to stage a protest or behave like demonstrators, reminding them that they were members of the police force. However, his intervention failed to persuade the personnel, who continued their protest. In view of the growing tension, security arrangements around the headquarters were subsequently strengthened. Additional police personnel were deployed, particularly at Gate No. 1, to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident. Paramilitary personnel were also stationed in the area as a precautionary measure. One of the last major instances of such a demonstration was witnessed in November 2019, when police personnel took to the streets following clashes between policemen and lawyers at Tis Hazari Court.
