NEW DELHI: A 45-year-old man from Delhi allegedly survived two attempts on his life — one involving gunfire outside his brother’s house and another in which he was deliberately hit by a car in a staged road accident — before he was finally run over by an SUV in the Kanjhawala area, police said on Thursday.According to police, the motive behind the repeated attempts was a 22-year-old enmity linked to the deceased’s alleged harassment of the accused’s sister, according to news agency PTI.Police said Pawan alias Jagpal Dabas (45) allegedly conspired to kill Deepak Dabas. The first attempt involved firing outside the house of Deepak’s brother. When that failed, another attempt was allegedly made on July 2, when Deepak was intentionally hit by a car. Pawan was arrested on Wednesday.“When the attempts failed, the conspirators made another attempt that resulted in Deepak’s death on July 16,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Shashank Jaiswal, during a press conference said.Four other accused have also been arrested in connection with Deepak’s death.DCP Jaiswal said the case came to light on July 16 after a PCR call was received at Kanjhawala police station regarding a man lying dead near an SUV in a field close to Chandpur Majra.A police team reached the spot and found the victim’s body. A damaged scooter was discovered around 100 metres away. During the investigation, the deceased was identified as Deepak, a resident of Majra Dabas village.An FIR was registered at Kanjhawala police station, and a special team was formed to probe the murder.Investigators later found that Deepak had earlier met with a road accident on July 2 while riding his scooter in Majra Dabas. He was hit by a car, and the incident had been registered under a separate FIR.“As the probe progressed, the team arrested Sagar alias Kala (30), on July 17. During sustained interrogation, he disclosed the conspiracy and told the team that he had intentionally hit Deepak with the car on July 2 in an attempt to kill him,” the DCP said.Police later recovered the vehicle allegedly used in that attempt from Atul alias Monty (30).Further questioning of Sagar revealed the alleged involvement of Pawan alias Jagpal Dabas, whom police identified as the main conspirator. According to investigators, Pawan had a longstanding rivalry with Deepak and had planned his murder.The probe subsequently led to the arrest of other alleged associates.Sahil (23) was arrested on July 22 for allegedly sheltering Pawan and helping him evade arrest, police said.“Prince alias Tilli (24), was arrested on July 26 for arranging the Scorpio used in the incident which was used to run over Deepak to his death,” the officer added.Pawan was arrested on August 12 after what police described as sustained efforts by the investigation team.According to police, Pawan has previously been involved in four criminal cases, while Sagar and Prince have two criminal cases each registered against them. No previous criminal involvement was found against Atul and Sahil.The five arrested accused have been identified as Pawan alias Jagpal Dabas, Sagar alias Kala, Atul alias Monty, Sahil and Prince alias Tilli.Police said they have recovered two vehicles linked to the case — the Scorpio allegedly used in the July 16 incident and the Hyundai i10 allegedly used in the July 2 attempt on Deepak’s life. Two mobile phones were also seized during the investigation.Police said the investigation is ongoing and all aspects of the alleged conspiracy are being examined before further legal proceedings are completed.
