Rajkot: A 27-year-old Dalit man, Vimal Vaniya, was allegedly stabbed to death in public near Bhaktinagar Circle in the city, on Thursday afternoon. Police suspect his wife’s brother, Kamlesh alias Kana, was responsible as he opposed Vimal’s inter-caste marriage to his sister.According to police, Vimal, who lived in the Sahkar Road area near Kothariya Main Road and worked in a factory, was approached by the accused and the two argued. The exchange escalated into abuse, and Kamlesh allegedly pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed Vimal.Vimal collapsed on the road in a pool of blood. Shopkeepers and passers-by alerted the authorities, and he was taken to Civil Hospital where he was declared dead. CCTV footage showed the accused fleeing the spot on a motorcycle.Assistant commissioner of police Bhavesh Jadhav said Vimal had married Sheetal, Kamlesh’s sister, seven years ago. Kamlesh was opposed to it. “The investigation so far indicates that resentment over the marriage led to the murder,” Jadhav said.In her statement to police, Sheetal alleged that her brother had previously threatened to kill Vimal whenever he encountered him. She said she cut contact with her family for seven years after her marriage. At Civil Hospital, she was inconsolable.Sheetal said Kamlesh could have attacked her and her son had they been with Vimal at the time.
