Guwahati: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) assistant sub-inspector allegedly shot dead two of his colleagues and injured another before taking his own life at the force’s 34 Battalion headquarters in Katimari in central Assam’s Nagaon district on Tuesday.Police said the accused, ASI Ballani Premabaram of Andhra Pradesh, was reportedly battling depression. After opening fire on his colleagues, he allegedly entered the B/171 Barrack and shot himself in the head with an INSAS rifle. He died on the spot.Nagaon additional SP (Crime) Abotani Doley said police received information about the firing around 7.30am.“The ASI, Ballani Premabaram, was going through depression and that’s why arms were not assigned to him. Three died in the incident,” Doley told the media.According to a police report, Premabaram was on duty at the camp’s main gate on Tuesday morning, but was not carrying an assigned weapon. He allegedly took an INSAS rifle from the guard room and moved towards the rear of the quarter guard.Police said he first opened fire on Havildar Vishnu Prasad Baghel, who sustained critical injuries and later died at a hospital.Premabaram then allegedly shot SI Ramnawal Singh Yadav, who had arrived from Lucknow for document verification. Yadav died on the spot.He subsequently fired at ASI Mane Govind Sripul, injuring him. Sripul was initially taken to Dew Care Hospital in Nagaon and later shifted to Guwahati for further treatment.A magistrate reached the camp and inquest proceedings were initiated. “Legal process is on,” Doley said.
