Critically ill newborn gets new lease of life at CHC Cholapur

Varanasi: A 26-day-old newborn, brought at the Community Health Centre (CHC) Cholapur in a critical condition on May 14 was successfully treated and discharged on Wednesday.The child was brought from a private clinic to the Pediatric OPD of Dr. Akanksha Singh at CHC Cholapur with severe jaundice and acute anaemia. During examination, yellowing was found to have spread to the palms and soles of the child.Laboratory tests revealed haemoglobin at 5.1 gram/decilitre and serum bilirubin at 14 milligram/decilitre.In view of the severe anaemia and hyperbilirubinemia, doctors conducted High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for further investigation, which indicated haemolytic anaemia and possible β-Thalassemia.Superintendent Dr. R.B. Yadav said that the child was immediately provided intensive phototherapy and two Packed Red Blood Cell (PRBC) transfusions were administered at an interval of 24 hours.Following treatment, the infant’s haemoglobin rose to 11.4 gram/decilitre and a remarkable improvement was observed.The child was kept under continuous medical supervision and was discharged in a satisfactory condition.Chief medical officer, Dr. Rajesh Prasad, said, “Continuous efforts are being made to strengthen specialist medical services at the district’s community health centres.”
