Couple killed in midnight house fire in Talaja

Rajkot: A 64-year-old man and his wife died after sustaining severe burn injuries in a late-night fire at their residence near Ramtekari Road in Talaja town of Bhavnagar district on Saturday, police said.The deceased have been identified as Kishor Vaitha and Rekha Vaitha (60). According to Talaja police, the couple was asleep in their room when the fire broke out.On receiving information, police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and shifted the couple to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.Preliminary investigation suggests the fire may have originated from a mattress, though the exact cause is yet to be ascertained. In his statement, the couple’s 36-year-old son, Vimal Vaitha, told police he had visited his parents a few days earlier and was away when the incident occurred. The couple was living alone in the house.Sources said both victims suffered more than 50% burn injuries. A forensic team has been informed and is expected to visit the site on Monday for further examination. Authorities said the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received.Police have registered a case of accidental death.
