Couple held in Manipur over killing of 6 Naga civilians

Imphal: A joint team of the Manipur Police, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Friday arrested a husband-wife duo in connection with the abduction and killing of six villagers from Konsakhul, a case that sparked widespread outrage and protests across Manipur.The accused were identified as Pradip, son of Tomba, and Ayingbi alias Mangaih, daughter of Nimkhinsau and wife of Pradip. Both are residents of Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district. Police said they were arrested in a “precise” operation conducted early Friday in the village.Police said the two were allegedly involved in the forcible abduction and killing of six Naga villagers who were abducted on May 13 from Leilon Vaiphei village. According to a police statement, witnesses identified the accused during the abduction. Search and seizure procedures were carried out during the operation, and legal formalities are being completed.Police said efforts were continuing to arrest other alleged accomplices.The arrests come a month after the mutilated and dismembered bodies of the six Nagas were found on June 10.The duo is expected to be produced before a competent court, where investigators are likely to seek custody for further probe.
