Guwahati: A day after 14 people were arrested for celebrating a birthday on a bridge over the Brahmaputra, police on Thursday apprehended another couple for a similar act.In a Facebook post, Guwahati Police said the couple was arrested, and their SUV was seized for celebrating the wife’s birthday on Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, news agency PTI reported.A video of the celebration went viral on social media following the earlier arrests.“Of all the places in our Awesome Assam to celebrate his wife’s birthday, Surajit Mandal & his wife Bijoya Mandal reached the bridge to cut the cake. In connection with Bharalumukh PS Case No. 80/2026, Thar has been seized, and the couple has been apprehended,” the post said.On Tuesday, police registered a case against a local businessman, his wife, and 12 others for endangering public safety and creating a nuisance by holding a birthday celebration on the bridge.They were arrested the next day, and four luxury vehicles were seized, PTI reported.“Following repeated incidents, we, Guwahati Traffic Police, would like to clarify that Kumar Bhaskar Varma Bridge is a bridge to cross the mighty Brahmaputra. It is not a pub. It is not a discotheque. It is not a restaurant. It is not a photoshoot destination,” police said.The clarification was issued for a few “audacious romantic partners for their stupid birthday plans,” they added.Police said the bridge is open for traffic but closed for birthday parties.The six-lane bridge, built at a cost of around Rs 3,030 crore, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14 and has become a major tourist attraction for its view of the Brahmaputra.(With agency inputs)
