Councillor’s husband assaults techie couple over garbage row in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: A case was registered on Friday against the husband of a councillor for assaulting a couple with sticks in Sector-67A.Manish Harsana, husband of BJP councillor from ward number 15 Bharti, allegedly attacked Prayag Varshney (34) and Shalini Gupta (34) — both software engineers — on Thursday after they objected to garbage lying outside a temple at a residential society.The incident, which took place between 11pm and 11.50pm at Ansal Versalia society, was captured on CCTV cameras. No arrest has been made yet.Prayag told police that he was repeatedly struck on his head, hands and legs with sticks before society residents intervened and stopped the assault. He said the attackers warned residents not to interfere and threatened to beat them up as well. The FIR, registered at Sector 65 police station, says that Shalini was threatened, assaulted and misbehaved with during the incident.Prayag, according to his medico-legal report, suffered six injuries, including on his chest, left elbow, left flank, left temporal region, head and left leg. “Manish knows me for a long time but I was surprised by his act as he did not stop his men from attacking me. He along with his men repeatedly assaulted us. It could have caused us serious injuries but we ran to save our lives,” Prayag told TOI.Manish didn’t respond to calls from TOI for a comment.The case was registered under sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 190 (unlawful assembly), 191(3) (rioting) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of BNS against Manish.According to the FIR, Prayag said that he and his wife Shalini had stepped out for a post-dinner walk around 10pm when they asked a group of village men sitting near the temple to remove the garbage lying in front of it. The said plot is near their house too.The men called Manish. Prayag told police that Manish soon arrived with seven to eight men. Following a brief argument, Manish and his associates abused the couple and threatened them.The group warned the couple to leave immediately, saying they did not know “the villagers” and would be beaten up if they did not leave. When Prayag asked them to speak politely, Manish slapped him. As his wife tried to intervene, two to three men pushed her.Prayag said that after he and his wife raised an alarm, the accused chased him and assaulted him. Soon, eight to ten residents of the society gathered at the spot, leading to another argument.During the commotion, another group of eight to ten youths arrived carrying sticks and batons, pushed past the residents and attacked him.Residents later took the couple to safety and informed the police control room. Prayag said that his hand was bleeding after the assault. His wife said that they were “lucky that the incident was captured by the nearby CCTV”.
