Pune: Police took 65-year-old Bhimrao Kamble — arrested in the alleged rape and murder of a three-year-old girl in Nasrapur on May 1 — to the crime scene around 3.30am on Wednesday to reconstruct the sequence of events in a bid to file a strong chargesheet in the case within a fortnight.Pune superintendent of police Sandeep Singh Gill told TOI that efforts were being made to file the chargesheet within 15 days to ensure an early trial. A senior officer of the Pune Rural police said heavy security arrangements were made at the spot to thwart any public backlash.A source said the investigation team had gathered substantial evidence and was working to strengthen the case further to secure conviction of the suspect. “Efforts are being made to build a strong case, especially as he was acquitted in two similar cases in the past,” another police officer said. The police on Tuesday said the post-mortem report confirmed asphyxia as the cause of the girl’s death. Multiple injuries were found on her body. The police have recommended three names for the appointment of a special public prosecutor. The state government is likely to finalise one soon.Family members of the suspect earlier demanded his strictest punishment. They said he had been living away from them for over a decade and they had no contact with him.The police said these statements against the suspect would be used in the court while building a strong case for conviction.
