Cops arrest 4 men over viral protest assault video

New Delhi: A day after a video purportedly showing a young protester being assaulted went viral on social media, police arrested four men in connection with the incident, which allegedly took place on DDU Marg in central Delhi Saturday.Police said no complaint had been received till Sunday, but they moved to trace the four after receiving information that they were planning to leave Delhi-NCR and go underground.Raman Saini (50), Vivekanand alias Vivek (32), Kapil Kumar (27), and Ravinder Singh alias Govinda Hindu (35) were arrested from various locations across Delhi-NCR. Saini is a resident of Pahari Dheeraj in north Delhi, Vivek lives in Nangloi, while Kumar and Singh are residents of Ghaziabad’s Loni and Indirapuram.Joint CP Madhur Verma said as soon as the video came to light, police teams were formed immediately to track the suspects. “Given the viral nature of the video and the possibility of the four absconding, they were discreetly traced and taken into custody,” according to a police communication.Police learnt Singh and Kumar are members of Hindu Raksha Dal, a right wing outfit, created by one Bhupendra Tomar alias Pinky Chaudhary. On Saturday, Chaudhary posted the viral video on X and wrote “These are my workers from Hindu Raksha Dal, which says what it does wherever cockroaches are found.”On Saturday afternoon, Ghaziabad police had detained Singh from UP Gate while he was trying to go to Delhi along with some other members of the outfit, and took them to Indirapuram police station. Singh was later released by police after which he reached Delhi. Around seven FIRs, including attempt to murder, have been registered against Singh in Sahibabad.During questioning, the men allegedly told cops that they were returning from a temple in Connaught Place in a car when they were confronted by protesters. The assault allegedly followed the confrontation, police said, adding that the four also referred to a video of the incident. Investigators are attempting to trace the footage they mentioned.Another video has surfaced on social media showing a group of people allegedly hitting a car, while a few men inside appear to be recording the incident. Police are examining the footage to establish its authenticity and determine whether it is connected to the case.A senior police officer said statements given by the four men were being verified. Asked whether investigators had found evidence of any organised group being involved in the assault, the officer said no such link had been established so far and the matter was being examined.
