Jaipur: The Congress Saturday intensified its attack on the state govt over the case of Renu Gupta, a woman who was seriously burnt during the passage of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s convoy on June 19. Former minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas warned that the party would gherao the chief minister’s residence if she was not provided financial assistance within 24 hours.Leading a protest at Collectorate Circle in Jaipur, Khachariyawas, accompanied by hundreds of Congress workers, demanded justice, adequate compensation and action against those responsible. The protesters also burnt the effigy of the CM and raised slogans against the state govt.Addressing the gathering, Khachariyawas alleged that Gupta, who runs a momo cart, sustained severe burn injuries during police action linked to the CM’s convoy. He claimed that despite her critical condition, police personnel failed to immediately shift her to a hospital, calling the incident “inhuman and shameful”.He said the govt must go beyond announcements and ensure immediate financial assistance, the best possible medical treatment, rehabilitation and strict action against officials found guilty of negligence.Targeting the CM, Khachariyawas alleged that the state govt failed to adequately respond to the incident despite the seriousness of Gupta’s injuries. He said the govt’s approach reflected insensitivity and amounted to a failure in delivering justice to the victim.Warning of an intensified agitation, Khachariyawas said the Congress would launch a statewide public movement and gherao the CM’s residence if concrete action was not taken to provide justice and financial relief to Gupta within 24 hours.
