Condos set to stretch into yoga mode today

Kolkata: As the city prepares to celebrate the International Day of Yoga on Sunday, with PM Narendra Modi leading a mass yoga event on Red Road, housing societies across Kolkata are preparing to host community yoga sessions for residents.Diamond City South in Tollygunge will hold its annual group yoga session on Sunday. “Last year, we had 60-70 attendants. It was difficult to accommodate them all in the hall, but the event can’t be held outdoors due to the heat,” said Pushpa Sinha, president of the committee. The society will begin preparing its community hall for the programme on Friday, June 19.Silver Spring Complex will mark the day with two events. Around 50 residents are expected to attend the Red Road celebrations on Sunday morning. “Our building is invited there. We got an invitation from the KMC,” said board member Ashok Baid.In the evening, the complex’s youth wing will organise a yoga session for children in the community hall. Commenting on the Red Road programme, Baid said, “It’s a promotion of yoga. It will encourage people to do yoga.”At Prince Anwar Shah Road, South City Club, in association with the South City Apartment Owners Association, will hold a yoga session at 9.45 am. “We are planning a yoga session during the morning in our banquet hall,” said Manoj Gupta, former secretary and member of South City Apartments.Siddha Pines in Rajarhat is also expecting increased participation for its Yoga Day event. “We have a dedicated yoga instructor and also a yoga room. Usually, people attend in batches for training sessions. The event will be conducted in our banquet hall,” said Manav Mehra, secretary of Siddha Pines.“We are inviting all our 500+ tannery owners to join us in the celebrations of the International Yoga Day, with the vision to improve our health and find peace and calmness of the mind. Let us unite and enjoy this day together with joy and happiness,” said Asif Iqbal, general secretary of the Calcutta Leather Complex Tanners’ Association.Manjeet Singh, a motor parts dealer, will be headed to Red Road with his two sons. “I am a fitness enthusiast and have been doing yoga for the past eight years. I will be going to participate in International Yoga Day,” said Singh.
