New Delhi: The city experienced its coolest morning for the second time this month, with the minimum temperature dropping to 21 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal, at its base station Safdarjung Tuesday.Ridge observatory in north Delhi was cooler, recording Delhi’s lowest minimum at 16.9°C, six notches below normal.The mercury in Safdarjung had dropped to 21°C Sunday as well, making it the lowest minimum temperature recorded in Sept in the city in the past 18 years and the second lowest since 2001. “The lowest on record so far is 20.8°C on Sept 6, 2008,” said an IMD official.The minimum is forecast to hover between 20°C and 22°C over the next two days. The mean minimum temperature this Sept was 25.5°C, up from 24.8°C last Sept.The maximum Tuesday was 32.4°C, over two degrees below normal, up from 28.7°C a day earlier. It is likely to stay between 32 and 34°C Wednesday. The mean maximum temperature this Sept was 34°C, compared with 34.8°C last Sept.Delhi received 79.7 mm of rainfall this month, the lowest recorded in a Sept since 2020, when the city had got just 20.9 mm. This Sept ended with a rainfall deficit of 35.5%, against the entire month’s normal of 123.5 mm. Though there were six rainy days this Sept, only light to moderate showers were logged. There was no ‘heavy rainfall day’ this month.In contrast, Delhi received 136.1 mm rainfall in 2025, 192.5 mm in 2024, 82.7 mm in 2023, 164.5 mm in 2022 and 413.3 mm in 2021.Monsoon retreated from the city on Sept 23, two days before its normal date of withdrawal, with Safdarjung logging 728.6 mm rainfall over the season. Categorised as ‘normal’, it was 16% above the average of 629.7 mm. Last year, the city had recorded 41% surplus rainfall in monsoon.
