Chennai deploys forces at Marina Beach, blocks key access points
Marina Beach under watch as Chennai police ramp up security

CHENNAI: Police tightened security around the Marina Beach in Chennai on Thursday and blocked key entry and exit points amid apprehensions that supporters of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam could gather there to stage protests over the govt formation issue in the state.Police deployed at least 50 personnel and six patrol vehicles along the Marina Promenade, and placed barricades on roads leading to the beach. Officers dispersed small groups gathering near the area and asked the public to vacate the spot.The Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured victory in 108 out of 234 assembly constituencies in the elections held on April 23. Though Vijay has submitted a list of 112 MLAs, including five from Congress, to give or R V Arlekar on Wednesday, he is yet to be invited to form the govt.Police said surveillance and security arrangements around the Marina Beach were strengthened to maintain law and order and prevent unauthorised gatherings.
