Chandigarh: Former Akali MP Prem Singh Chandumajra on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene for the parole of Jagtar Singh Hawara and release of other Bandi Singhs. In a letter to Modi, Chandumajra cited prolonged demands by Panthic and human rights organisations and peaceful protests seeking their release. He said he had led a delegation from Hawara village to meet the Punjab Governor and submitted resolutions from 152 village panchayats supporting Hawara’s parole. He also cited favourable reports from authorities and the Punjab govt’s no-objection certificate.Chandumajra appealed to Modi to consider Hawara’s parole on humanitarian grounds, particularly given his elderly mother. He also sought commutation of Balwant Singh Rajoana’s death sentence to life imprisonment and urged the PM to resolve issues concerning Hawara, Rajoana, Amritpal Singh and other Bandi Singhs.Chandumajra cited the Modi govt’s decisions on issues concerning Sikh sentiments, including the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor, GST exemption for langar and reopening of 1984 anti-Sikh violence cases, as reasons for hoping for a “sympathetic and positive” decision.
