West Midnapore: The officer in charge of Chandrakona police station, Purushottam Pandey, has been closed to the police lines following the death of 20-year-old Rahul Ruidas in cop custody. While SP Papiya Sultana called it a “routine transfer”, a departmental inquiry is underway.Sultana said sub-inspector Pratyay Das, who has previously served as the OC of the Special Operations Group, will take charge of the police station.On Sept 10, Ruidas was arrested alongside two others on charges of assembling for a robbery. He was remanded to four days’ police custody. According to police, Ruidas was found hanging in the bathroom of the police station on Sept 13. He was taken to hospital and died later that night.The victim’s father, Bifal Ruidas, filed a complaint at Ghatal sub-divisional court alleging that his son had been murdered in custody, demanding a comprehensive investigation. Following court directions, an autopsy was conducted on Tuesday.
