Chandigarh: The Chandigarh municipal corporation has finally started allotment of the newly planned works of road recarpeting after completing the entire tendering process. Though on the one side works on earlier allotments are already going on, out of the approximately dozen new tenders, two have been recently allotted to the eligible bidders. The MC has planned to complete maximum allotted works before the monsoon season.“Since the tenders are floated sub division wise, the sub divisional officer (SDO) is looking after each tender and then these will be allotted at the level of the executive engineer concerned of the building and road department. The applied terms and conditions of the works will be monitored at the engineering officers’ level to ensure the works as per laid-down parameters,” sources in the MC told TOI.The engineering department of the MC has prepared an estimated cost of around Rs 87.34 crore to recarpet around 529km of roads in Chandigarh in the new financial year, starting April 1, 2026. This new tender exercise is of the second phase of the road recarpeting works, as the first phase of work started last year. The planned and allotted works comprise road recarpeting as well as recarpeting of the parking lots of the commercial areas in different parts of the city.Like last time, this time too, the National Institute of Technical Training and Research (NITTTR) in Sector 26 will be the third-party agency for the technical audit of the roads, which will evaluate the work and issue the certificates accordingly.“Since the NITTTR will check the recarpeting of the roads based on laid-down specifications and criteria, the agencies or bidders will get payment based on the NITTTR certifications. Since quality control is one of the key components in the works, it has to be ensured on ground,” sources said.
