Dibrugarh: Chabua Municipal Board on Friday launched an awareness campaign titled ‘Catch The Rain’ to promote water conservation and groundwater recharge in the town. The initiative, supported by the ministry of information and broadcasting, comes amid growing concern over changing rainfall patterns and the need for sustainable water management.Banners and awareness materials displayed across Chabua urged residents to take a pledge to conserve water, stressing that human life cannot be sustained without it. Officials highlighted practical, low-cost steps that households and communities can adopt to improve rainwater capture and recharge.Key measures promoted included installing recharge pits and shafts at suitable locations, repairing defunct borewells to aid groundwater recharge, and adopting rooftop rainwater harvesting. Residents were encouraged to direct rooftop runoff into storage tanks, place rain barrels beneath drainpipes, and channel excess rainwater into recharge pits instead of allowing it to drain away. Officials also said steps such as covering open drains and desilting ponds and other water bodies can significantly improve the town’s ability to retain rainwater during the monsoon.Chabua Municipal Board chairperson Brojen Baruah said, “Water is not an infinite resource, and every drop we save today secures our tomorrow. We often don’t realise the value of water until we face a shortage. Through this campaign, we want every household to understand that conserving water is a shared duty. We are urging residents to install recharge pits, repair defunct borewells and adopt rooftop rainwater harvesting wherever possible.”Officials said more awareness programmes, including door-to-door outreach and demonstrations on setting up rainwater harvesting structures, will be conducted in the coming weeks to ensure the message reaches all households in the municipal area.
