Guwahati: Three people died, and two were critically injured, after their vehicle caught fire following a collision with a streetlight pole in Assam’s Nagaon district, police said on Thursday.The accident occurred at Kenapatty near Puranigudam when the vehicle, registered in Arunachal Pradesh, was travelling towards Guwahati from the state.According to a preliminary investigation, the driver allegedly lost control and rammed into a streetlight pole installed on the divider between the two lanes of the road. The impact triggered a fire that quickly engulfed the vehicle, trapping several occupants inside.Three people were unable to escape and died on the spot. Their bodies were recovered from the charred vehicle. Police were working to establish their identities.Two other occupants, identified as Vikas Kumar and Sonu Kumar, sustained serious injuries. They were taken to a nearby medical facility and later shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, where their condition was reported to be critical.Police said the occupants were from Bihar. The vehicle was owned by Vikas Kumar, while Sonu Kumar was reportedly driving when the crash occurred.Investigators were verifying the circumstances of the accident, including when and where the deceased boarded the vehicle. They were also examining whether speeding, loss of control, road conditions or other factors contributed to the accident, and probing the cause of the fire.
