Silchar: Cachar has introduced a single-rod contraceptive implant offering pregnancy prevention for up to three years.The long-acting, reversible method was launched on Thursday at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, SM Dev Civil Hospital and Chhoto Mamta Model Hospital under National Health Mission.Cachar is among the latest Assam districts to introduce the implant, which is already available in Kamrup Metro, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhubri and Dibrugarh.Placed beneath the skin, the implant is meant for women seeking to space or plan pregnancies without using daily contraception. Its use will be voluntary and based on informed choice, with beneficiaries receiving counselling beforehand, health officials said.Eleven doctors in Cachar have been trained in counselling, insertion and follow-up care according to prescribed guidelines. Officials said trained personnel at the three healthcare institutions would improve access to the method.Cachar district health services acknowledged the foundation’s technical and programme support in introducing the service, saying the collaboration would strengthen technical capacity and ensure quality care.Dr Aloka Banerjee, head of obstetrics and gynaecology at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, described the implant as safe and effective and urged eligible couples to seek counselling.Women and couples may contact their auxiliary nurse midwife or ASHA worker, or visit the nearest health facility.
